Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust Larsen & Toubro (L&T)

 

Steve Palmier was appointed by Woods Bagot to Lead the Architect and Design-Build Team of L&T for the Statue of Unity project, stationed in India.

 

This is a Statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the founding fathers’ of Modern India, spread over 20,000 sq.meter of project area.

 

The project includes Exhibition Halls which narrate the story of Indian National Movement, the unification of India and Sardar’s contribution. A Memorial Garden, Link Bridge connecting Sadhu Island with the mainland, Memorial and Visitors Center and Hotel.

The Statue will have an estimated capacity of 15,000 visitors/day; The upper observation level can hold up to 200 people at a time or 3,000 people per day. The statue is located on a rock out crop called Sadhu Bet island within the Narmada river facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam. At 182 metres, this is the largest statue in the world, twice the height of the Statue of Liberty, and over 100 times his real life size. The statue is constructed with a reinforced  concrete core and steel framing clad with a bronze alloy. The main statue site is accessible via a 5km vehicular access boulevard from an arrival plaza which houses the hotel along with visitors parking. Visitors also have an option to access the statue in a boat along the river by way of an eco-tour.

Steve lead the Design-Build Team in India consisting of 20 Architects, 15 Engineers as well as International Design Consultants.
